Size, Distance, and Appearance

The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, about a quarter the size of our planet, with a diameter of roughly 3,476 km. Despite its smaller size, it has enough mass to affect our planet in meaningful ways. The average distance from Earth is around 384,399 km, roughly 30 times Earth’s diameter.
Its surface is a mix of dark volcanic plains and bright, ancient highlands, dotted with craters of various sizes. Even though it shines brightly in the night sky, its actual surface is quite dark, reflecting only slightly more light than old asphalt.

How the Moon Was Formed

Scientists think the Moon formed about 4.5 billion years ago, shortly after Earth itself appeared.
The most widely accepted idea is the giant impact hypothesis: a Mars-sized object collided with Earth, and the debris eventually came together to create the Moon. While other theories exist, this one explains most observations and is widely supported. Understanding its formation helps us see how Earth and the Moon have influenced each other ever since.

Locked in Synchronous Motion

A unique feature of the Moon is that it rotates and orbits in a synchronized way, always showing the same face to Earth.
This near side is covered with dark lava plains and bright highlands, punctuated by massive craters. For centuries, we’ve been able to study this side, while the far side remained hidden until space exploration allowed us to map it fully. Luna program achieved several successful robotic sample returns and deployed the first lunar rovers, Lunokhod 1 and Lunokhod 2, in the 1970s. These rovers traversed the lunar surface, gathering images and data that deepened scientific insight into the Moon's geology.
In the 1990s, NASA launched missions like Clementine and Lunar Prospector, which mapped the lunar surface, assessed resources such as water ice in the polar regions, and studied the Moon's composition and gravity in detail.
The 2000s and 2010s saw increased international activity, with missions from Europe (SMART-1), Japan (Kaguya/SELENE) and others.

Ongoing and Future Missions

Today, multiple nations are actively preparing new lunar missions, both robotic and crewed. NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon, including landing the first woman and the next man on the lunar surface, with sustainable exploration plans. Other countries and private companies are developing landers, orbiters, and rover missions.
Future missions focus on using the Moon as a platform for science, technology testing, and potentially resource utilization to support longer-term exploration of Mars and beyond.
